The .ie domain has been officially registered (with SRI by me) and his earn node is in the nodes file. What is wrong with his id? There is a problem with the registration of the .IE domain but this is an internet problem which I am working on with the responsible people. As to trivial use of the network - I agree that this may cause a resource probl em for some sites but our experience is that it is through such use that novice network users become familiar with the tools of networking which they then apply to real academic work. This makes it difficult to impress on people the real costs associated with networking however but it is not a perfect world - My personal belief is that we should provide as open an enviornment as possible consistent with running a secure viable network. If you start to restrict facilities you will only attract the people who are 'in the know' and therefore you will have a network for networkers and hackers not a network for users. Restrictions also tend to be an attraction for the afo rementioned hackers who in a more open enviornment may limit their activities to a more useful form of curiousity.....but then again maybe not. As part of our policy on Networking for the users we have just set up an EARN based list for the EARN USERS GROUP following EARN88 in Turkey. To tune in send a SUBSCRIBE EARN-UG command to LISTSERV@IRLEARN sorry for going on so much Kieran
