Word
- To see TOC of section headers:
View - Navigation pane
- Header on first page only:
- Check "Different first page".
- Document properties section is almost invisible:
File - Info - on RHS: "Properties" (tiny dropdown menu) - Advanced properties
Spacing
- To insert a page break:
Position cursor.
Insert - Page Break.
- To insert a line break (but keep within same paragraph):
Shift-Enter
- To insert space before/after an element:
Select element.
Layout - Spacing - Before/After
- Blank page at end of document:
Proofing
- Track changes
- Review - Track Changes (inserts change tracking into text)
- Review - All Markup - No Markup (hide changes and show new document)
- To change to UK English proofing:
Review - Language - change proofing language
- Review - Editor
- This is pretty extreme. Huge numbers of (mostly useless) suggestions.
Exhausting going through them all.
- Strategy: Fix the smaller groups.
- Remove proofing marks:
- File - Options - Proofing -
uncheck "Check spelling" and "Mark grammar errors"
- File - Options - Advanced - Editing options -
uncheck "Keep track of formatting"
Network files with macros
- Trying to edit a file on network (with sftp) that contains macros.
- Security settings block this.
- Lot of issues setting a network location (with sftp) as a "Trusted location".
- Quick solution:
Copy to C: drive for editing. Copy back to network when done.
Images
- To insert picture:
- To make image sharp and high-quality:
- File - Options (at bottom) - Advanced - Image Size and Quality
Do not compress images
Default resolution - High fidelity
Set for "All new documents"
- Maybe: Right click on image (or "Picture Format" top menu) - Size - Scale 100%
- To make image span 2 columns:
- Insert image.
- Format - Wrap text - Top and bottom.
- Set to size 100%
- (Or select bottom RHS and drag it to expand to size you need.)
- Save as PDF - "More options"
- Can set custom title (not just filename).
- Tools - Do not compress pictures
Screenshots
- Word seems to prefer if
ClearType
is on for screenshot text.
- ClearType-off screenshot text looks fine in Paint, bad in DOC, though fine again in printout.
- To insert screenshot with Cleartype on:
- Cleartype on.
- Regular web browser font. Normal 100% size.
- Screenshot. Paste into Paint.
- Insert image in DOC. Let it auto-size (not necessarily 100%).
Open issues in Word
- Some things may not be hyphenated
e.g. long URLs moved to new line, making lines before them look odd.
Can workaround this by breaking URL by hand with a space inside it.
Q. How can you force hyphenation in long URLs and other long strings?
